For Referring Physicians

Plasma Life Center offers outpatient therapeutic plasma exchange for patients who may benefit from apheresis-based intervention. We welcome referrals and collaborate with existing care teams.

Clinical Capabilities

Equipment

Terumo BCT Spectra Optia apheresis system — the same platform used in hospital-based apheresis programs. Supports standard TPE protocols with albumin replacement.

Board Certified Physician Oversight

All procedures supervised by our board-certified physician. Individualized protocols developed based on patient history, diagnosis, and treatment goals. Detailed procedure records provided to referring physicians.

Clinical Setting

Dedicated outpatient apheresis suite in San Carlos, CA. Trained clinical staff with continuous monitoring. Designed for patient comfort during 1.5–3 hour sessions.

When to Consider Referral

Therapeutic plasma exchange may be appropriate for patients with conditions where removal of pathogenic plasma components (autoantibodies, immune complexes, abnormal proteins) is part of the therapeutic approach.

Common referral contexts include:

Autoimmune and neuroimmune conditions with established ASFA indications
Patients who may benefit from antibody reduction as part of their treatment plan
Cases where outpatient TPE is preferred over inpatient apheresis
Patients seeking consultation about TPE relevance to their condition

We evaluate each referral individually. If TPE is not appropriate for a patient's situation, we will communicate that assessment clearly and promptly.

Information That Helps Us Evaluate Patients

When referring a patient, the following information supports efficient evaluation:

  • Primary diagnosis and relevant subspecialty assessments
  • Current treatment regimen and response history
  • Relevant laboratory results (e.g., antibody titers, CBC, metabolic panel)
  • Prior apheresis history, if any
  • Specific clinical question or treatment goal

Referral information is not required for a patient to request a consultation, but it helps us prepare a more informed initial evaluation.

Coordination of Care

We view our role as part of your patient's broader care team. Our approach includes:

  • Clear communication of evaluation findings and treatment plans
  • Procedure notes and outcome summaries available to referring providers
  • Willingness to discuss cases before or after referral
  • Respect for existing provider relationships and treatment plans
