Answers to the most common questions about Therapeutic Plasma Exchange and what to expect at Plasma Life Center.

About TPE

TPE is a medical procedure that separates your blood plasma — where toxins, inflammatory proteins, and harmful substances accumulate — from your blood cells. The old plasma is discarded and replaced with fresh albumin solution. It's sometimes called "an oil change for your blood" because it mechanically removes what your body can't clear on its own.

TPE removes inflammatory cytokines, pathogenic autoantibodies, forever chemicals (PFAS), microplastics, toxic metabolites, aging-related signaling molecules, and damaged albumin — substances your organs cannot effectively filter on their own.

TPE is used for autoimmune diseases (lupus, MS, myasthenia gravis, PANS/PANDAS), neurological conditions (Alzheimer's, neuropathies), chronic conditions (Long COVID, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia), allergy and mast cell disorders, and longevity/anti-aging goals.

No. Dialysis filters waste products and excess fluid (replacing kidney function). TPE removes and replaces the plasma itself — the liquid carrying antibodies, toxins, and inflammatory proteins. They are different procedures.

What to expect

The only discomfort is a brief needle pinch when IV access is established. Once connected, the procedure is painless. Most patients read, watch shows, or relax during the 1.5–3 hour session.

A typical session takes 1.5–3 hours. You sit comfortably in a recliner while the machine processes your blood, monitored continuously by a physician and nurse.

Hydrate well, eat a normal meal with protein and salt, and review any medications with the clinic in advance — especially blood thinners and blood pressure medications. We provide detailed preparation instructions before your appointment.

Most patients feel normal immediately and can resume regular activities the same day. Some experience mild fatigue for a few hours. Stay hydrated, eat normally, and avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.

Frequency is highly individualized based on your condition, lab results, and goals. During your free consultation, Dr. Yunce will design a tailored treatment plan for you.

Safety & side effects

TPE has an excellent safety profile and is FDA-approved, used in hospitals for decades. We use the Terumo BCT Spectra Optia — the gold standard — and every session is supervised by a board-certified physician.

Most patients experience little to no side effects. The most common include mild fatigue, lightheadedness, tingling (from temporary calcium changes), minor bruising at the IV site, and feeling cold. These resolve quickly. Serious complications are rare.

TPE may not be appropriate for patients with certain cardiovascular conditions, active infections, severe bleeding disorders, or albumin allergies. Dr. Yunce evaluates each patient individually during the consultation.
